Ranching Weekend

Another busy weekend, it was a weekend of ranch activities. I had Friday and Saturday off from my in-town jobs (billing office, track coach), so was working with my husband and on the farm. Or, as I said, more on the ranch side of the operation.

Friday was a beautiful sunny day with minimal wind and not too hot.  What few flowering plants I have in our yard here are blooming- tulips are up, flag irises are in full show, and the flowering crabapple next to the house is beautiful.  Of course, the dandelions look great too... As do the little yellow flowers in our pastures-- Jeff thinks they are some type of native sweet pea.  I should have taken a photo of them, too, I guess!
Jeff and I spent Friday going over some of the fences along the pastures we will be using right away this spring.  There were a few spots along the fence lines in need of a new stape or two.  Of course, we took Harvey with us. We went over three pastures- one here at our house, another is just west of Tom and Carol's house, and is adjacent to their pasture, and the third is a pasture we are renting for the first time this year, north of Tom and Carol's a few miles. Jeff took charge of the more physically challenging tasks of wire stretching and splicing, and I mostly hammered staples and bent wire clips to hold the barbed wire to the fence posts.  It was nice to be productive.  Fencing is one of those activities that show immediate results, a satisfying day of work.

Saturday, a few of our neighbors came over for sorting cow/calf pairs into their breeding groups, and vaccinnating the calves. It was a full day of moving cows, but again, satisfying and productive.

Today it is a little cooler with on-and-off light rain showers.  The rain is very welcome, as our spring has been pretty dry this year. Hopefully there will be a happy post soon about how well our crops are doing, so long as we can keep getting a little rain!
