First Meal in the Field

It's hay season around here.  For my husband, that means early mornings and long hours in the swather. For me, it meant my first 'meal in the field' today.

During the busy summer seasons of haying and harvest, the guys work in the field all day and it would be terribly inconvenient to come back to the house to eat. Furthermore, some fields are quite a ways away.  So, in an attempt to minimize time spent away from work, those who are left at home will prepare a meal and take it out to those who are at work in the field.   Today was my first go at it. My 'trial run' would perhaps be more accurate. I only had to feed myself and my husband, in this case. Once we get into the full swing of harvest later in August, it could be anywhere from one or two people up to 8 or more to feed.

I think it went OK today. I made a skillet hash out of leftovers from the fridge, packed it up in an insulated tote and brought it to a field south of our house where my husband was running the swather. I remembered to bring silverware, plates, water, and dessert. We ate on the back bumper of my car, then my husband went back to work and I went home.

It could seem like a lot of work to prepare food, package it, and drive it out to wherever the work is being done, but I think of it as a service and a way I can be helpful. Anyone who has done hard work knows how delicious food tastes when you've earned it. I enjoy preparing a meal to nourish and replenish the reserves so progress can be achieved. Looking ahead, I am sure I will get many more opportunities.

In other news: My kitchen sink will not plug, and my bathtub will not drain.  Time to start washing dishes in the bathtub! :)

  2. Well... it's a lot easier to prepare for one or two than it will be for 8 or 10! Either way, it was a great trial run!

  3. Ah, I remember those days taking lunch out to the field! I'm sure Jeff will enjoy whatever you bring out. I also used to bring out cans of pop or bottled water to Dad later on in the day. Memories....

  4. Katie-- most of the recipes that I gave you for your book are "field meals" if you increase the recipe ingredients :) -- FISH
