Mothers Day Gardening

In honor of Mothers Day, here's a photo of my Grandma and Grandpa Adam (that I poached from my Uncle's facebook page some time back):

I just love this photo.  Perhaps taken outside the family farmhouse in southeast Iowa? She looks like a person I would want to know and would probably like, even if we weren't related! And, I love that dress!

Today was an unseasonably hot day in northern Montana- highs in the mid 80's.  Jeff and I woke up early and went over to Tom and Carol's house to help get the gardens planted and ready to go for the season before the day got too hot.  We added a few last minute amendments to the soil, then planted quite a few row crops: bush beans, peas, sugar snap peas, a few varieties of carrots, a few varieties of radishes, white onions, yellow onions, and lettuce blends. Also corn, and crossing our fingers for no hard frosts yet this spring.  There is also some volunteer spinach coming up already that we augmented with some seeds intermixed, and some asparagus coming up.  Still to come are tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, and zucchini we will buy as transplants from local greenhouses.

Lunch was a deliciuosly summery barbecue of hamburgers, baked beans, corn on the cob, watermelon, and a dessert of strawberries and ice cream.

It really felt like summer today. The heat wave has gone on long enough, however. With our recently seeded crops we are in need of a RAIN!  Forecast calls for a decent chance tomorrow night- cross your fingers!

Happy Mothers Day to all the Mothers among us!
