Winter Creekstomping

Jeff got me a new camera for Christmas. Actually, I should say that Santa got me a new camera for Christmas as it was in my stocking on Christmas morning. That Santa sure is good...

I brought the camera with me on a recent bird hunting expedition, shortly after a snowfall.  We were on Sage Creek, just a few miles south of our house, and accompanied by a few friends. We didn't get any birds, but it was a beautiful, sunny afternoon, and just so wonderful to be outdoors. I was elated to be outdoors in the sun and snow, discovering the winter ecosystem as the snow-cover revealed it.

The land in winter is completely different and thoroughly adorned with snow. A twinkle of snowflakes, frost in the sunlight. The evidence of animal travels- tracks as clues revealed in plain sight. A fresh layer of snow has the interesting dual capability of obscuring, softening some features while accentuating others.

I never appreciated winter fully until I lived in a location where winter seemed to be the most celebrated season. Now there's almost nothing I enjoy more than snowy winter activities such as cross country or downhill skiing, snowshoeing, or hiking in a frozen creekbed.
