July Rains

Over the past week or so we have experienced a number of pop-up rain showers and thunderstorms.  Thankfully, no hail with them this time.  The timing is quite nice, actually, for providing much needed moisture at a pivotal time for the spring wheat crops. As I understand it, now is when the kernels within the wheat head are really filling out and developing.  The winter wheat has already surpassed this stage of growth and is charging ahead toward harvest.

After a long period of dry, hot weather, the recent rains have been refreshing, even if they have been brief showers.  Even if just for an evening, the rain showers brought cooler temperatures.  My rain buckets filled again, allowing for less usage of our own water for the tomato plants.

It rained some over the weekend on our camping trip to Belt, MT, too.  Jeff and I can now report that our tent is indeed water proof and wind proof!

Nature continually renews, refreshes, and changes. Though it is fickle and difficult, especially in a livelihood that is so dependent upon the right weather at the right time, it is so wonderful when the weather works out the way we would like.  Sometimes, Mother Nature provides lovely surprises, too. Following a recent evening rain shower, we were rewarded with a rainbow and a very beautiful sunset.

  1. Absolutely beautiful photos, Katie. The smiley face barn never fails to make me smile, too. Thanks for sharing your writing and photography talents (among others).
