Harvey and the Steer Calf

This morning Jeff and I took a driving tour of our cows.  The wind was howling and it was cool.  The grasses shivered against the gusts like weary soldiers trying to keep flags hoisted in the face of a drawn out battle.  Platoons of crested wheatgrass and sage.

Mostly, the calves look pretty good.  Their ship date is drawing near, however, and we will soon be thinking about turning them out onto crop stubble to bulk up their finishing weight.

Harvey was with us today.  He is very curious about cows.  Some of the cows are curious of him too, others instinctively charge towards him, scaring him away.  Here's a 'slideshow' of one such interaction:

Harvey inches closer to a steer calf.

As if Harvey is thinking, How close will he let me get??

They actually licked each other's noses.

Harvey runs back to hide behind me and Jeff.  The steer wins the showdown!

Harvest is complete now.  With the rain we received today, Jeff is feeling a lot better about his plan to seed winter wheat on our new lease land.  He has done some seeding already, and now will do quite a bit more.

After another weekend away (sorry about the blogging hiatus!) I am anxious to be here for a few weeks and sink into a routine of working in Chester, and being home.  Home.

I remember that first day in June I was here in the house by myself, trying to organize all my stuff we had just moved up from Bozeman.  I was feeling overwhelmed by everything their was to do, and I remember distinctly asking myself, How long until this feels like my forever home?

I guess it sneaks up on you.  There was no switch that turned in my mind, but to me, now it is definite that this is my home.  Jeff, Harvey, and this land, are my Home.
